Howlite is the stone most commonly dyed to imitate turquoise — sold under names like "white turquoise," "howlite turquoise," or the trade name "turquenite." It is also dyed to mimic lapis lazuli, coral, and red coral. In 14 years serving the community we've made it a point to label our stones honestly: if it is natural howlite, we call it howlite; if it is dyed, we say so. Natural howlite is a chalky white to off-white borate mineral crisscrossed with fine grey or black veining — a spiderweb pattern that is characteristic and unmistakable once you know it. It sits at Mohs 3.5, which makes it genuinely soft and porous. That porosity is exactly what makes it so easy to dye, and it is also why we recommend keeping it away from prolonged water exposure; undyed pieces are durable enough for a brief rinse, but dyed material can bleed color in water. In crystal tradition, howlite is turned to for calm and patience — the stone people reach for when the mind won't quiet down. Howlite is white, porous, and accepts dye readily, which makes it the most common substitute sold as turquoise. Natural howlite is white to pale grey with fine dark veining — if your "turquoise" looks uniform throughout or shows white at a drill-hole edge, it is worth a closer look.
